UNTITLED
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Childbirth is a lot noisier than Aang remembers. He dimly recalls standing quite a distance away when Katara tended to the birth of Hope, and when Kya (and Bumi) were born, he'd been away on Avatar business.
But now? Now, he's here, and Katara's screaming and yelling and cursing his name, and he wonders why Toph had told him that childbirth was a beautiful experience.
Maybe she was being sarcastic.
In the middle of Katara's threats to withhold sex from him for a century -- eh, he doesn't care, he did spend a hundred years in an iceberg, after all -- she gasps and digs her nails into his palm. He winces, praying that she doesn't notice, and in a blink of an eye it's all over. His wife is leaning back against the wall, panting, and a small bundle is passed over to him where a small, red face is peeking out and oh my --
There's a sudden rush of warmth in his chest as he stares down at his son. His newborn son. He's got a little tuft of hair on his head and his face is still wrinkly; a mouth opens in a quiet yawn as eyes open for the first time. It's true, he registers faintly, that all newborn's eyes are blue, but no baby's eyes is as perfect as his son's.
His son
"Aang?" Katara says now. She reaches for the baby -- their baby -- and cuddles him close. "Can you bring Kya and Bumi in?"
He nods dumbly and opens the door to an anxious Kya and an excited Bumi. They're both uncharacteristically quiet as they huddle near their mother, peering at the strange in their mother's arms. "Is that...the baby?" Kya asks quietly, and Aang can hear the unspoken what if you don't love me after this in her voice.
Aang nods and picks up his children, one in each hand, and kisses Kya on the cheek. "Yes. He's your new little brother. You two have been absolute angels this whole time and it's time to meet the newest member of the family."
"What will we name him?" Katara says, stroking the side of the baby's face. They all watch, enthralled, as the baby turns his head to follow the finger, waving his tiny fists around in the air.
"I thought we decided on Tenzin." Aang lets Bumi onto the floor, where he climbs into bed next to Katara. They snuggle for a bit; Katara shifts the baby to one arm as she wraps another around Bumi. She smooths his hair across his forehead and Bumi smiles contently. Everything is perfect right now, Aang thinks; all he went through -- the pain, the heartbreak -- to get here has been worth it.
"Tenzin it is." Kya hugs Aang and buries her head into his neck. Tenzin yawns again and the hair across Katara's brow is blown backwards in a stream of air as he exhales. Katara and Aang share a look and burst out laughing.
"Welcome home, Airbender Tenzin."
